Examples are: Referral to a pediatric Neurologist, Curative Rehabilitation Center, help with SSI, Tutors for learning disabilities, psychotherapists for extensive depression and anxiety, summer camp for children with epilepsy, M-Team at schools, among others. Follow-up is conducted to assure that our client's needs are met.
Case Management - Includes a complete evaluation rendered to a child with a parent or caregiver to assist the person in receiving or gaining access to needed medical, psychological, educational, and other services in receiving appropriate care.
Individual and Family Counseling - Relating to personal problems, everyday living, one on one support. Helps children with epilepsy deal with issues related to consequences of their seizure disorder, e.g., fear, depression, anger, stigma, loneliness, low self-esteem, difficult interpersonal relations.
Support Group Services - EFSEW provides support groups for parents, family members, children with epilepsy and teenage youths with epilepsy.
Seizure Recognition and First Aid - Comprehensive, specific educational programs for school personnel and students. We also provide special programs for children in the classroom to allow for acceptance and understanding of the student with seizures.
Seizure Education for Day Care Centers - Care Givers Program-Among families in need of Day Care are those with children whose seizures are diagnosed and who are on medication. These children face a greater likelihood of being denied at Day Care Centers, using excuses as "full enrollment". This Foundation provides education regarding epilepsy and first aid to Day Care staff. As a result, the Day Care providers are more comfortable enrolling children with epilepsy in their program. Under the ADA, children with special needs are allowed equal access to Day Care.
We provide to school nurses a specially prepared program regarding seizure recognition and first aid, early diagnosis, intervention and assisting the school child with seizures. Videos are utilized in this program.
Minority Outreach - Includes special activities for low-income families and minority cultures that have problems accepting seizure disorders and children with multiple disabilities. Our outreach activities include training and information on seizure recognition and first aid to a variety of agencies serving children and families, teen transitional homes, social service agencies, community centers, churches, etc.
Parent Support - EFSEW is committed to helping parents receive the information, assistance and opportunity they need to enable them to help their child and family deal with the consequences of epilepsy and build a strong, supportive family.
We believe that an informed parent is the young child's strongest voice and advocate. Children benefit greatly from our specialized services to parents. For example:
